Do You Need Training in Order to Find a Job?

Workforce Investment Act Training

The Workforce Investment Act (WIA) is a federally funded program that provides individualized occupational skills training for eligible laid off workers and, economically disadvantaged adults. The goal of the WIA program is to:

• Serve individuals with barriers to employment with training that enables them to secure long-term employment and self-sufficiency
• Trainees must demonstrate limited reemployment options in their current field, and require training or intensive job search services to return to work
• Eligible participants can receive enhanced services (including assessment, career counseling and in depth job search)

Participants may also qualify for training assistance purchased through the Individual Training Accounts (ITA) system. Options here may include Certificate programs at Community Colleges, CNA, Class A and B tractor trailer licenses, computer courses and many more.

In order to determine eligibility for training, customers must fill out a complete job seeker training form and a WIA Training Questionnaire available at the front desk. A WIA counselor will contact applicants to discuss eligibility and program requirements.

Employment Skills Program (ESP)

Vocational training and enhanced services may also be provided to active Transitional Assistance for Families with Dependent Children (TAFDC) recipients who seek employment.The ESP program also offers:

• GED
• Career counseling
• Job training, job search and job placement
• Assistance with transportation, child care and training and job related expenses

To obtain services, a customer must have a referral from their DTA caseworker.
